Ian Karkull
One evening Kent Nelson and Inza attended a house party hosted by Everett Dahlen, an archeologist who sought the lost city of Ragnor in the Sahara with his partner, Ian Karkull. The party ended early when Dahlen was discovered dead and Nelson witnessed a strange, shadow-like creature leaving through the window.
Meanwhile, in a laboratory near New York City, Karkull waited patiently by a machine he called his “shadow maker.” When the shadow-like creature appeared before him, Karkull sprayed him with a “materializer beam” and…

Karkull considered his invention a boon to crime. “Who can stop shadows?” The man asked why he wanted to kill Dahlen…
Flashback
A few years earlier, Karkull and Dahlen located Ragnor and a precious jewel…

Dahlen left Karkull to die and Karkull swore revenge, claiming that Dahlen didn’t know he was a scientific wizard who would wreak vengeance on all the world and be the greatest criminal alive.
Back in 1941
Wrapped in a mantle of pure force, Dr. Fate flew high over the city, his psychic powers leading him straight to the laboratory where the shadow was made.

Karkull proved to be a modest threat, but Dr. Fate turned his invention against him and made him a shadow.
A man with your genius could have made a name for himself as a useful citizen! Instead, you chose to lead a criminal life! As a shadow you will wanter through the world forever helpless!
But will he remain alone and friendless forever? Watch for the return of this arch-villain…
The Shining Knight
When we last saw Justin Arthur, he was a Knight of the Round Table who was frozen in ice during a fight with an ogre. 1,300 years later, in 1941, he and his steed were discovered by archeologist and historian Professor Moresby when he was looking for remains of Viking settlements.

I don’t know if the world is ready for you just yet, Sir Justin.
It wasn’t long before Sir Justin was ready for it, though, stopping a theft at Moresby’s museum and making a pledge:
And by the blade he enchanted, I pledge to rid my new homeland – my new age – of all vileness and dishonor. To that end, I shall fight alone – or in concert with other champions, as I did in days of yore!
