Justice (Part 1)

On a stormy night in Washington, D.C., a man named “Smythe” paid President Roosevelt a visit with news that the British spy network had learned Hitler intended to invade England at any moment. Lacking resources to repel a full-scale attack, Smythe was sent to plead for Roosevelt’s help.

However, he handed Smythe a folder containing photographs of some Americans who may be able to help as private citizens. Smythe had heard of these so-called “Mystery Men…”

In Keystone City’s Police Commissioner office, two of these mystery men have been summoned: Flash and Green Lantern. Scolded for introducing themselves to each other with compliments, Smythe explained…

The two flew to Scotland to uncover the invasion plans, but were attacked by…

Knocked unconscious, they were taken to Berlin and held captive.

Meanwhile, in Salem, Massachusetts, Dr. Fate watched what was happening and grabbed Hourman to join him on a journey overseas. They rescued Flash and Green Lantern; however, Dr. Fate said:

I cannot attack Hitler while he holds the Spear of Destiny – and now he makes ready to unleash forces he can neither understand nor fully control!

Unleash forces he did as…

As battle ensued, Dr. Fate sent four fiery tendrils through the sky to collect Sandman, Hawkman, and the Atom, none of whom had previously met Dr. Fate. But that’s only three… who dod the fourth tendril collect?

Able to force the first wave of German soldiers to retreat, the impromptu team was dejected to learn that a second wave wa right behind. There seemed to be no hope until…

Furious over attempts to stop his invasion, Hitler sent a long-range super bomber with orders that the American capital be obliterated.

The eight heroes joined forces and raced to Washington, D.C. where they once again faced the Valkyries. Their leader, Gudra, sneaked into the White House and held her spear above President Roosevelt. However, the Atom intervened and took the weapon for him.

Afterwards…

I’m afraid we’re too used to operating on our own to ever make much of a group. But Flash says…

Roosevelt commented that it’s a shame these eight heroes… the greatest any nation had ever known… couldn’t stay together as an army regiment. Hourman commented:
