1939, Part 3

Dian Belmont

One night, a woman broke into the home of Wesley Dodds…

In exchange for helping the Sandman round up her gang, he promised to help “the Lady in Evening Clothes” discover the identity of her father… Lawrence Belmont, an accomplished lawyer and district attorney.

Subsequent to this revelation, she began to help the Sandman with his fight against crime and became Wesley Dodds’s lifetime companion.

Wesley Dodds & Blackhawk

One afternoon, Wesley Dodds and Dian Belmont attended an airshow…

Let’s have a big hand, ladies and gentlemen – for the hotshot of the seven skies – the new king of the Tigers himself – a visitor to our friendly shores all the way from troubled Poland but still full of good, old-fashioned, American spunk —

Later, when they stopped by the judge’s house to thank him, he had a proposition for Wesley…

Good men follow the word of their country, Wesley. But when that country is unable or unwilling to take the necessary actions – brave men take the lead of good men. I want you to join a select group of brave men in the European Resistance Movement.

At the first meeting…

Janos says:

But know this surely – Poland must never fall victim to Hitler’s Reich. This is the time for us to save her and waiting will be her death. You have the moneys to help me make new flights to save her. So long as there is a sky above my beloved homeland where I can fly in, I will fight. This I swear, and I hope you will help me.

When Janos is framed for murder in a conspiracy to discredit him and subvert his mission, Wesley’s alter ego, the Sandman, investigates…

When the innocent Janos lands in jail, the resistance group questions its potential investment. Knowing the truth, Wesley commits to contributing $50,000 cash the next morning. Five others join him. Charlton Walsh does not, because… he’s responsible for the murders, even though he organized the group.

All ends well as the truth is revealed and Janos takes off for Poland…

In the months to come, the Nazi war machine crushes all of Europe…

One day a new name appears on the horizon… a name that strikes terror in the hearts of men… Blackhawk… line an angel of vengeance, Blackhawk and his men swoop down out of nowhere, their guns belching death…

Steel, The Indestructible Man

After reading the news about Hitler’s invasion of Poland, biology student Henry “Hank” Heywood enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. In November, 1939, he was badly injured in an explosion on his base on Long Island, caused by a costumed man calling himself “Baron Death.”

Hank’s former professor, Dr. Gilbert Giles, used experimental technology developed for transplanting artificial organs to perform extensive surgery on him.

First there was steel alloy tubing to replace the pulped bone in my arms and legs and ribcage… then a metal casing to protect my skull… and micro-motors in all my joints to help me move all that steel… then more substitutions – an artificial lung for the ruined one… and back-up devices to aid my damaged heart. And finally, most – most painfully, the bio-retardent was used to induce skin-regrowth over the burned areas… covering the whole patchwork contraption with a flesh that made it my own…
