Mesozoic Era

The Mesozoic Era lasted from about 252 to 66 million years ago and is the second of three eras during which complex life evolved on Earth. It contains three periods: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous.

251 million years ago, during the Triassic period…

Swamp Thing (vol. 2) #104 (Feb. 1991)

On some worlds, life took root briefly, while others remained barren. On Jupiter, Earth, and a fifth planet, life blossomed and thrived.

As we know, the Green gained dominion over the Earth, but on the fifth planet, evolution followed a different path, based on fungi and molds.

Swamp Thing (vol. 2) #104 (Feb. 1991)

This planet’s orbit drifted to close to Jupiter’s gravity and was destroyed, its life combined into a collective unconscious called, “the Grey,” that laid dormant as it searched for a new home.

The Grey arrived on Earth as a meteor that crashed in the southern hemisphere. The Green wanted a new elemental to assume the essence of the alien life form in order to learn more about it. Matango, the 13th in line of protectors of the Green, volunteered.

However, Matango had ulterior motives.

Swamp Thing (vol. 2) #104 (Feb. 1991)

He thought the new life form might allow him to expand his awareness beyond Earth and help him gain dominion. However, the alien life had a mind of its own and could use Matango to meet the needs of the ghosts of the Grey’s former planet.

Swamp Thing (vol. 2) #104 (Feb. 1991)

The Green and the Grey agreed to share the planet and, for a long time, there was peace…

200 million years ago, during the Jurassic period…

As reptiles grew larger, dinosaurs became the dominant life form on Earth.

Justice League of America (vol. 5) #8 (E. Aug. 2017)

During the Jurassic period, the first true mammals evolved. They remained relative small, but began to spread widely.

During the Cretaceous period…

In the year 100, 842,246 BCE, there lived various species of giant insects, including ants and bees. Among them were what would later be called, the Ornitho-Men, birdlike creatures with the heads of bald men. Their true origin may remain unknown, because, contrary to unpopular belief, humans did not exist at the same time as dinosaurs.

The Flash (vol. 1) #125 (Dec. 1961)

65-66 million years ago, Earth experienced a mass extinction event that ended the dominance of the dinosaurs and other large creatures. (A few survived in regions that came to be known as “Skartaris” and “Dinosaur Island.”) Soon after, mammals ascended to dominance…
